Why FanTALES

FanTALES stands for the creation of multilingual interactive stories by fans in schools for a more inclusive world.

Stories can help foster empathy and understanding of context and culture, which are critical in a plurilingual and pluricultural world. In the digital wilds, communities of practice can be encountered where stories are told, retold, and experienced interactively. Key examples of such practices are fan fiction writing, a form of creative writing that transforms popular media in some way, and the development of interactive fiction, a form of non-linear narrative that verges on the world of gaming. While these practices -- in particular the dialogic interaction with stories that is inherent in them -- can effectively eliminate cultural stereotypes and discrimination, thereby fitting in well with the current educational agenda of Europe that promotes tolerance and nondiscrimination, fan fiction and interactive fiction are only slowly finding their way into language education.

To address this gap, the project leverages practices from fan fiction, interactive fiction, and multilingualism for developing materials that support technology-mediated transformative storytelling in the European language classroom and beyond. Teacher trainers, researchers and teachers from Belgium, Sweden and Germany develop, evaluate and disseminate these materials with a view to creating impact on:

  • language learning in secondary schools, particularly in terms of modernizing the teaching of literature and of other creative forms of linguistic and cultural expression;
  • the new media literacy of adolescents, adults, and teachers;
  • the attractiveness of teacher education for languages and the profession of language teaching more generally;
  • the promotion of intercultural dialogue in a multilingual context.
